Four children again meet the Psammead, a cantankerous sand-fairy who once granted them wishes but will no longer do so. He tells them of an Amulet which will give them their heart's desire — but they must use one half to find the other half, and that was lost long ago. They travel back in time to Egypt, Tyre, Atlantis and other civilisations, facing more dangers and adventures than they have ever known before.
